Common Causes of Ear Discharge
1. Middle or Outer Ear Infection
Bacterial or fungal infection often cause pus or foul-smelling discharge. There could be pain in the ear, swelling, and reduced hearing.
2. Swimmer’s Ear (Otitis Externa)
Water inside the ear canal can cause to inflammation and discharge.
3 Ruptured Eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation)
An ear infection or sudden pressure change can cause rupture of the eardrum, causing blood or fluid to from the ear along with sharp ear pain or hearing loss.
4. Foreign Body or Trauma
Inserting foreign objects into the ear can injure the canal, especially in children, leading to bleeding or watery discharge.
5. Cholesteatoma
A cholesteatoma is a non-cancerous growth behind eardrum and mastoid bone. This often presents with foul-smelling discharge and hearing difficulty. Cholesteatoma Requires surgical management.
6. Post-Surgical Discharge
After microscopic ear surgeries like tympanoplasty or mastoidectomy, minor ear discharge may occur. However, persistent or foul discharge post-op warrants visit to operating ENT surgeon.
