Middle Ear Bone Reconstruction for Conductive Hearing Loss
Ossiculoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair or reconstruct the tiny bones (ossicles) inside the middle ear. These osscicles are interconnected and move along with the tympanic membrane to help conduct the sound to the inner ear.
Hearing may be impaired if these bones loose the contact with other (due to infection or trauma) or become fixed due to diseases such as tympanosclerosis or otosclerosis.
This condition is called conductive hearing loss.
Dr. Archana Jhawar, senior ENT surgeon with over 24 years of clinical experience, offers precise and effective ossiculoplasty at leading ENT center in Navi Mumbai. Her special interest is Ear microsurgery.
Most of the time ossiculoplasty is performed along with the reconstruction of the ear drum perforation (Tympanoplasty) especially when both the ossicles and eardrum are damaged.
Ossiculoplasty is recommended when these middle ear ossicles are affected –
Patients often experience muffled or reduced hearing and difficulty hearing in noisly environments.
The primary benefit of Ossiculoplasty is the potential improvement in hearing. By reconstructing the ossicular chain, sound transmission can be restored, leading to enhanced auditory function.
Recovery after ossiculoplasty varies, but most individuals can expect some improvement in hearing over time. Patients will need to follow postoperative care instructions, which may include restrictions on certain activities and medications to prevent infection.
Patients should contact their doctor if they experience persistent pain, signs of infection, or any worsening of hearing after ossiculoplasty. Regular follow-up appointments will allow the doctor to address any concerns and track the long-term outcomes of the procedure.

Ossiculoplasty is done under anaesthesia so no pain is felt during the surgery. Mild ear discomfort may occur after surgery , which is mana with pain medication.
Most patients experience a significant improvement in hearing. Final hearing results depend on the extent of damage and the condition of the inner ear.
It can be done under general or local anesthesia depending on the case and patient preference.
Ossiculoplasty is usually performed through the ear canal or a hidden incision behind the ear, so scar is not visible.
